Wesnoth 1.18.2
The minimap controls are large and in a column to the left of the minimap. When I have my mouse on one, the tooltip obscures the minimap, making it hard to get any benefit from toggling the setting while watching to see what flickers.
The previous version I used (1.16) had very small icons in a row under the minimap. The tooltip didn't get in my way.
